Overview

Located on the second floor at 124, Jalan Trus in the heart of Johor Bahru, Sunday Morning Coffee Shop is a quaint and cozy spot that effortlessly blends Japanese-inspired comfort food with a focused coffee culture. This intimate café, tucked away yet inviting, offers visitors a calm refuge for both dedicated coffee lovers and casual diners alike.

The space is modest in size but thoughtfully arranged to create a warm atmosphere. Large windows invite natural light, making it ideal for those who enjoy a quiet moment with coffee and people-watching. The ambience suits a range of audiences—from solo visitors seeking quality drip or single-origin brews to small groups eager to sample their Japanese curry dishes.

Culinary highlights here thoughtfully balance taste and texture. The menu is anchored by Japanese curry rice options and bento sets that showcase comfort and heartiness, such as the Egg and Beef Bento and the popular Mentaiko Baked Rice. The latter comes highly recommended, especially for those who appreciate robust umami flavors, complemented by tender seafood. The curry udon and chicken katsu curry offer equally satisfying warmth, though some patrons have noted subtlety in the udon seasoning, suggesting a flavor profile that leans toward delicate rather than bold. Light bites like the spinach white sauce toast and pizza toast add variety without overwhelming the palate.

For dessert, their Japanese pudding stands out as a decadent choice, though the caramel topping may lean slightly bitter for some preferences. The brownie with ice cream provides a comforting, familiar end to the meal.

Where this coffee shop truly shines is in its beverage offerings. The selection may not be extensive but focuses on quality and balance—from house blend coffees to carefully brewed hand drip and ice drip coffees, all delivering robust aroma and depth. Customers have praised the medium roast iced coffee and house blend for their smooth, balanced profiles, making them perfect companions to any meal or a delightful solo pick-me-up.

The staff's approachable and friendly attitude enhances the experience, accommodating guests seamlessly—even navigating cash-only policies with QR code payments. Practical touches, such as secure nearby parking and a film roll developing service, add layers to the customer experience, reflecting a café that caters thoughtfully to its community.

While the stairs leading up require caution, the overall experience remains charming and well worth the visit for those seeking a serene spot to enjoy well-crafted coffee and Japanese-inspired dishes in Johor Bahru. For anyone who appreciates a refined yet approachable café experience, Sunday Morning Coffee Shop is a compelling destination on a Sunday morning or any day you need a quiet moment with excellent food and drink.

Came here right after opening hour so its still quiet. I had their house blend coffee which has a perfect balance. Mushroom baked rice and japanese pudding wad also suit my taste. The staff/owner was so nice. I had a problem of not owning enough cash, they dont accept card. Fortunately, their QR code works well with my bank app.

cozy space for a good cup of coffee! If you sit near the window, you get to do some people watching too. Pudding was really decadent but the caramel on top tasted a tad bit too bitter for my liking. Would definitely visit again to try the mains and other blends of coffee!

Discovered a cute, aesthetic café tucked away on the 2nd floor. I dropped by around 1PM, not too crowded at that time. Their specialty seems to be coffee, so I went for the medium roast iced coffee. Not bad at all, worth a try if you’re into coffee. The space is small and compact, but still cozy and comfortable. If you’re planning a visit, I’d recommend parking at the larger parking lot nearby or at Galleria for convenience.

Service was great, their specialty drip coffee was good too. Only regret is ordering the mentaiko udon - the flavour is too subtle for my liking and there’s barely any mentaiko taste. If you want something that’s more flavourful, you should get the mentaiko baked rice instead.

Coffee choices not many but all great taste and aroma. Enjoyed the mentaiko baked rice (明太子ドリア) with really good mentaiko with the seafoods inside. Chicken kantsu curry and curry udon also great. Love the cabbage salad as well. Also can drop your film rolls for develop and scan with reasonable price as well. However need special caution when using the stairs.

The drip coffee was so pleasant, with a slight fruity taste! We enjoyed bento, baked rice, and udon – the food presentation was top-notch, beautifully Japanese-style on individual trays! The ambiance was simple and quiet, perfect for a relaxing lunch. We sat by the window, watching the world go by. Overall, a happy and relaxing lunch! #Coffee #Bento #Rice #Udon #JapaneseFood #Lunch #Restaurant #Relaxing #yckcorp

Tucked away on the second floor with just a small sign to guide you, Sunday Morning Coffee Shop feels like a hidden gem in Johor Bahru. The coffee here is really good—smooth and flavorful. I especially enjoyed their coffee float. But the real surprise for me was the lemon cake—so refreshing and perfectly balanced. It’s the kind of treat that makes you pause and appreciate every bite. My friend and I ended up staying until closing time without even realizing it. The vibe was just that relaxing. I really appreciated how the staff didn’t rush us or say anything, even though we clearly lost track of time. I actually felt a little bad afterwards for not checking the closing time on Google Maps, so thank you to the team for being so kind and patient with us. The interior is simple but charming, with cute details that make the space feel really inviting. If I had to point out one tiny thing, the stairs leading up are a bit narrow—but honestly, once you're inside, it's completely worth the climb. Definitely one of my new favorite spots in JB. Can’t wait to come back.

Tried the drip coffee (blend number 3) and it was really good. The staff were nice too. However the food can be much better. The salmon portion on the bento set was really tiny. The mentaiko sauce was watery. There was an ant on our pudding. There is potential in the cafe if they pay more attention to their cooking and kitchen cleanliness. Note that there is a steep set of stairs you have to climb before reaching the cafe.
